Marsa's people, animals, buildings and props are built from free art packs, most of them by Quaternius (quaternius.com). Marsa's own content factory assembled the packs, cut them to fit the game's budget and recoloured them, so what stands in the world is a made thing rather than any single pack as it came.
The Quaternius packs
- Universal Base Characters — the people's heads, eyes, brows, hairstyles and their 65-joint rig. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Modular Character Outfits – Fantasy — the peasant and ranger outfits. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Universal Animation Library and Universal Animation Library 2 — walking, idling, talking, formal walking and jogging. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Ultimate Animated Animals — the deer, the stag and the wolf. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Farm Animals Animated — the pig, which Marsa made into its boar. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Medieval Village MegaKit — the town kit. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Fantasy Props MegaKit — axes, hammers, pickaxes, swords, knives, trowels, cups and plates. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Stylized Nature MegaKit — the trees, the ground and the far treeline. CC0 1.0 Universal.
- Lowpoly Medieval Weapons — the wooden bow. CC0 1.0 Universal.
CC0 places a work in the public domain: credit is not required, and Marsa gives it anyway. Several of the packs — Universal Base Characters, Modular Character Outfits – Fantasy, both Universal Animation Libraries, and the Fantasy Props, Medieval Village and Stylized Nature MegaKits — were bought from their source releases by Marsa's owner.
Motion capture
The movement of Marsa's people comes in part from the CMU Graphics Lab Motion Capture Database (mocap.cs.cmu.edu). Its acknowledgment, word for word:
"The data used in this project was obtained from mocap.cs.cmu.edu. The database was created with funding from NSF EIA-0196217."
The database is free to use, including inside products that are sold, but its data may not be resold, even in converted form. Marsa keeps that condition: the motion-capture clips ship only inside Marsa and are never offered as a pack of their own.
Everything else
Everything else is Marsa's own: the world, the writing and the code. A few small things — a broom, a fishing rod, a loaf of bread — were modelled from scratch by Marsa's content factory, and no pack holds them.
